Environmental Impact statement 2023-2024

Louise and Jonathan are committed to minimising the impact of their activities on the environment and these activities contributing to climate change.

The key points:

  • To minimise waste by evaluating operations and ensuring they are as efficient as possible.

  • Minimise toxic emissions through the use of clean energy sources and reducing energy consumption.

  • To actively promote recycling and repurposing of commodities.

  • To source and promote a product range that minimises the environmental impact of both production, cooking, and distribution.

  • To purchase the best ethically sourced ingredients from local producers, suppliers and To produce dishes that use fresh, seasonal, local produce intending to reduce greenhouse gases Produced when growing.

  • To source shellfish and other sea and freshwater fish exclusively from the waters around the Shetland Isles and to ensure that traditional methods of fishing are employed that minimise bio kill.

  • To reduce the amount of fossil fuels burnt in wood burners and fire pits and to only use firewood from sustainable sources and beachcomb the shore in Gutcher for driftwood. We also use reclaimed wood from old pallets.

  • To ensure that all meat products are sourced from animals that are reared to the highest standards of animal welfare and that locally reared lamb, beef, and pork are used as a preference in all cases.

  • Reducing the air miles of food and consumables by using local producers and manufacturers.

  • To support local service providers, contractors, and the community in any way possible.

  • Pledge to carry out regular beach cleans to remove the plastic and other litter from the Gutcher Harbour area.

  • To use renewable and sustainable green energy providers to help reduce the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels.

  • To provide adequate resources for guests and visitors to recycle as much as possible during the stay.

  • To reduce the consumption of animal, avian and marine protein by offering plant-based dishes as and when requested.

  • To launder at low temperatures where appropriate and line dry linens as a preference.

  • To reduce the wastage of water by using water capture methods and using showers rather than baths.

  • To maintain a high level of insulation using treated sheep's wool insulation.

TERMS & CONDITIONS and ACCESSIBILITY GUIDE

By making a booking, you are deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.

Enquiries can be made by telephone or email regarding availability and prices.

For the comfort and safety of all our guests, all of our rooms and facilities are non-smoking.

We accept dogs and cats with an additional deposit payable. Exceptions may apply.

A non-refundable deposit (see ‘Cancellation policy’ below) will be required to secure the room for you. 

Deposits are due 30 days before arrival.

Method of payment is by cash, debit card, credit card, business debit card, business credit card, or bank transfer. The remaining balance is to be paid on arrival before the key is issued. Dinners, afternoon tea, packed lunches, and lunches are charged at the appropriate rate, and the total balance must be settled on departure.

Alternatively, you can pay before arrival via Internet banking; please ask for our bank details.

Confirmation of bookings will be sent by email or telephone call/text upon receipt of your deposit.

Check-In, unless previously arranged with us, is 3.00 pm.

Unfortunately, we do not accept children under the age of 16.

Guests are asked to vacate their rooms by 11.00 am on the day of departure.

Cancellation policy –

Deposits are non-refundable. Once your stay has commenced, no refund is due if you cancel the remainder of your stay. Dates booked are not transferable. We recommend you take out appropriate travel insurance and are happy to supply you with relevant information should you need to claim. Repeat cancellations will result in full payment required on booking and only part refunded if dates can be re-sold on a like-for-like basis.

Cancellation by Owners: The owner reserves the right to refuse any booking and to cancel any bookings already made if the property is unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., through fire, flood, etc). In such circumstances, a full refund of all monies paid (but no further liability) will be made. The owner shall not be under any other liability if such cancellation occurs. Note: in the unlikely event of a cancellation, the agent/owner will make every possible effort to secure alternative accommodation if required. We are not responsible for failures in utilities such as power cuts, water supply, etc. We offer free WIFI, and we cannot be held accountable for loss of service if outside our control.

We operate a No Smoking/Vaping Policy in all rooms/buildings.

Liability:

Other than for death or personal injury caused by our negligence or misrepresentation, our total liability to you is limited to the price of the Booking and the fullest extent permitted by law; all warranties are excluded, and in no circumstances will We be responsible for any indirect or special damages.

We will not be liable for failure to perform to the extent that the failure is caused by any factor beyond our reasonable control. We have a zero policy on verbal or physical abuse, threatening or aggressive behaviour. 

All residents must complete a registration form on or before check-in; a copy can be scanned, copied, or printed as a hard copy. We will send you a link to complete and submit the form online.

You are responsible for any damage or loss caused to us or our property by your act, omission, default, or neglect, and You agree to indemnify Us and to pay Us on demand the amount reasonably required to make good or remedy any such damage or loss.

We reserve the right to terminate your Booking immediately without being liable for any refund or compensation where guests do not comply with these terms and conditions, are deemed to be a risk to health and safety, or whose behaviour the proprietors feel is unacceptable. Where complaints are made by other guests about the behaviour of individuals, these will be investigated, and if upheld, the individuals and associated guests may be asked to leave the premises. In such instances, no refunds will be given.

 

INTRODUCTION

The Old Post Office B&B offers 2 ground-floor rooms, an ensuite double room, and a twin ensuite room; the accommodation building is within our grounds, and guests have access to a communal living/dining room. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are only served in the communal living/dining room. At the host's discretion, meals may be served in the garden.

PRE-ARRIVAL – When you have a time of arrival, please text, phone, or email the following numbers; we will aim to greet you on arrival.

ON ARRIVAL – We aim to greet you on arrival, but please ring or knock on either the front or back door of the main house if we are not about it. Please note that check-in is after 3.00 pm. We can leave keys in our key safe at the front of the building.

If you need assistance during your stay, we have provided a list of useful emergency numbers should you need medical or emergency assistance urgently.

BEDROOMS

The Old Post Office has a double room ensuite with a modern shower room and a twin room with two single bedrooms and a private shower room. Guests have equal rights to use the dining/living room.

There are connected smoke/CO2 and fire alarms in both suites and throughout the property.

There is a fire notice in the rooms. Please acquaint yourself with the procedures.

One window in each room opens fully as a fire escape. Please acquaint yourself with the exits.

There is a fire extinguisher in the living/dining area.

The muster point is located by the car park across the road.

Your hosts will act as fire marshals in the event of a fire.

Do not dry items over the electric heaters; this is a fire hazard.

Televisions are remote control operated, as is the FreeSat box.

There are charging points underneath the room lamp.

Please respect your neighbouring guests and keep noise to a minimum.

No smoking/vaping in accommodation or the main house.

GUEST AREAS

Guests are welcome to sit in the back garden on the selection of chairs, tables, and benches. Guests are reminded to please take care of any uneven ground or steps whilst on our property. Please respect the peaceful nature of the area and beware of uneven ground. Sensible footwear is advised. No unaccompanied children are allowed.

Dogs can be exercised along the causeway (please be aware of farm vehicles that use the causeway). Dogs should be kept under control, ideally on a lead. Injury to sheep, cattle, and wildlife caused by pets is challenged by locals and crofters; dependent on the severity of the injuries caused, the owner of the dog will be asked to compensate the crofter/farmer for any veterinary bills and euthanasia treatment required.

Please do not feed the sheep, geese, seagulls, cattle, otters, swans, seals, and crows. It is traditional for crofters to rear hill sheep and cattle that roam freely. The Old Post Office does not own any sheep or cattle and accepts no responsibility or liability for any injury and/or damage to property caused by cattle or sheep.

LAUNDRY

We offer a wash, dry, and fold service for personal laundry. We can lend you an electric steam iron. The charge for this service is £10.00.

ARRIVAL & CAR PARKING FACILITIES

Car parking can be found directly in front of the property; this is a SIC parking bay. The Old Post Office accepts no liability or responsibility for guests' vehicles parked in the council-owned parking bay.

Visual or hearing-impaired guests are welcome to stay alone if the impairment is mild; otherwise, they should be accompanied by a friend.

 

DINING ROOM


The dining room is on the ground floor. The front door has a low-level doorstep.

The dining room has a wooden floor. There is one table seating up to 6 people. Catering for special dietary requirements is available with advance notice. Toilets are only available in guest bedrooms.

THE CUSTOMER WILL

Take all reasonable care to avoid damaging the premises or any fixtures, fittings, or other items belonging to The Old Post Office B&B. If the customer damages any property or any fixtures, fittings, or other items belonging to The Old Post Office B&B, the Proprietors will issue an invoice to cover the cost of repair and/or replacement as appropriate, together with administration costs. In particular, soiling a mattress will incur a standard charge of £500.00 plus any other additional costs incurred by the Proprietors. The amount shown on the invoice shall be final and binding.

Refrain from smoking and taking controlled substances inside the premises of The Old Post Office and the accommodation block. If the customer fails to abide by the prohibition against smoking, then any damages caused as a result of any loss and/or expenses suffered by The Old Post Office will result in the Proprietors issuing an invoice to cover the cost of repair and/or replacement as appropriate together with the amount of any loss and expenses and administration costs. The amount of the invoice will be not less than £100.00 and shall be final and binding. The Police will be called if it is believed beyond a reasonable doubt that controlled substances are being taken, used, or traded on the premises.

Read the fire precautions displayed on the premises and adhere to them if necessary.

Accept your car and belongings are left at your own risk.

Ensure no third parties are invited onto our premises, only registered guests, unless by prior arrangement and agreement of the hosts, who may set a curfew.

Do not use any hair dye or tanning solutions in the rooms or en-suites.
